Beat Overwhelm as a Female Entrepreneur: 8 Easy Steps

overwhelm stress female entrepeneur

If you’re a female entrepreneur, you’re almost certainly feeling stressed and overwhelmed the majority of the time.

With all those business opportunities, projects and other tasks to get done, it can be hard to know where to start and if you can even get anything crossed off that ‘to-do’ list.

That’s not even mentioning all the other commitments in your life like your partner, your kids or even basics like grocery shopping, cleaning and eating well…

As mum to an energetic 3-year-old, wife to my gorgeous husband and carer for my autistic brother and business owner, I get it.

I feel like I’m constantly having to juggle everything and if I’m not careful, I end up with very little time to myself.

But over the years, I’ve learned that if I want to achieve my dreams, make a bigger difference in the world, grow my business and go at the pace I want to, I need to take better care of myself.

If I don’t, I risk everything.

My health, my relationships, my business, and my dreams could all suffer severely or even fail if I don’t learn to take care of myself first.

That’s why I’ve created this blueprint. To help you manage your stress and beat overwhelm so you can perform at your best and grow your dream business.

1. Check where you are in your menstrual cycle

Did you know that where you are in your menstrual cycle has a massive impact on everything from your mood and your energy levels to your motivation, focus and even how you react to stress?

That’s why the first thing I do when I’m feeling overwhelmed is check where I am in my cycle.

If I’m at the end of my cycle and my period is just around the corner, I make sure I’m kinder to myself and schedule extra time to relax, unwind and focus on less demanding projects.

After all, what’s the point in pushing through the stress and fatigue when I know I’m not going to be at my productive best anyway? By taking a step back, I can still be productive and save my most motivated, high-energy moments for when I’m truly feeling my most awesome.

But are you truly clued-up when it comes to your hormones? Do you understand what is happening in your body at any given point during the month and how to feel at your most confident, empowered and successful best?

2. Stop…and think about how to feel your best self

If you were to describe how you’re feeling, you might explain that you just want to hit a big imaginary ‘pause’ button or just retreat to your bed and hide under the covers.

But do you really know what is going on? Do you understand what has truly been overwhelming you?

That’s why I’d encourage you to stop and reflect on what exactly has been overwhelming you so you can take steps to manage your stress and avoid feeling like this again.

I recommend that you grab your notebook and a pen and then do a brain dump of all your stressors. Sometimes just getting it off your chest like this can be enough to make you feel better. You might also be surprised to see what items end up on your list! I certainly was!

Using this information, you can start to map out what you can do to help you feel better. This could include:

  • Finding someone to take care of your admin
  • Asking for more help with the kids
  • Getting a friend or neighbour to pick the kids up from school
  • Finding a cleaner to take care of your home
  • Booking that manicure or massage you promised yourself ages ago

3. Review your non-negotiables

When I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I often realise that I’ve been neglecting myself. I haven’t been getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, exercising or eating well so focus next on getting these back on track.

Aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night, get your body moving, drink plenty of water and focus on eating nutrient-dense meals throughout the day. And no, no skipping meals allowed, no matter how busy you are! Or letting those sugary snacks creep in!

[Btw, heres a great free resource that can help you reduce your sugar intake]

4. Get sleep and rest as much as possible

When you’ve got soo much going on and so many deadlines, it can be tempting to stay up later to try and get everything ticked off your ‘to-do’ list.

But if you do so, you’re going to end up feeling exhausted, feel the impact of stress more acutely and also end up making silly mistakes and performing way below your best. Your stress levels will increase and you’ll find yourself in a constant state of fight-or-flight. Which, by the way, has a huge impact on our health.

So instead of pushing on through (as you might believe you should), shut down your laptop, put your phone on aeroplane mode and get some rest. If you can, also schedule at least five minutes for yourself each day to disconnect and do whatever you want- even if it means just sitting somewhere peaceful.

I make sure I do this every day and I’ve really noticed a difference with my mental health, wellbeing and performance as a female entrepreneur.

5. Take a supplement

Taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement has always been my go-to.

By taking just one pill, I can ensure I’ve covered my basic nutritional requirements (not always easy when you’re rushing around!) and can feel energetic, healthy and focused. I also like to take collagen, omega 3s and vitamin D as extras.

And you know what? I always notice when I’ve forgotten to take them! This used to happen quite often after I had my daughter because I started to store them hidden away and high up so little hands couldn’t get hold of them.

6. Give yourself a break from social media

We all want to stay up to date with the news and find out what our friends are up to on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram.

But spending too much time glued to our phones, checking every notification and reading every headline or constantly comparing ourselves to others can have a detrimental effect on our mental health. We’re overwhelming our brains with information, focusing on everything negative in the world and end up feeling worse than ever before.

So ask yourself, “Am I spending too much time scrolling on social media?”

If the answer is yes, consider limiting the time you spend online or even taking a break altogether.

Great strategies include:

  • Setting yourself a time limit
  • Creating no-phone times during the day (for your family members too!)
  • Mute, unfollow or even block people and pages who bring you stress
  • Think twice before you post anything

7. Enjoy quality time with family

Spending time with your loved ones will help reduce stress and anxiety and leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling inside.

When you’re feeling this loved, supported and centred, you’ll be in a better place to kick ass in the world, launch your project, grow your business and share your wisdom with the world.

There are actually studies to prove that it works!

That’s why, whenever I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I make sure I’m spending quality time with my husband, daughter and brother and doing something that we all love, even if that’s just having a day out together or relaxing at home with a movie.

8. Create a simple ‘Beat Overwhelm’ plan

Speaking for myself, it’s hard to remember to do everything when I’m juggling so many commitments and already feeling the pressure.

That’s why I suggest you do what I do and quickly create a high-level plan that frees up your brain space but also makes sure you’re taking care of number one.

>Do I stick to those things 100%? No. However, I have a flexible plan and schedule lots of white space for those times when shit goes left.

What could you do to feel better? How can you ensure you’re getting the rest, sleep, movement, nutrition and hydration you need? What about family time?

Set up reminders on your phone so you don’t have to remember and you’ll be good to go!

Before I go…

You’re amazing. And you matter.

If you want to grow your business and build your dream lifestyle, you need to put your oxygen mask on first so you can create the awesome things you were born to do! This could include spending more time with those you love, taking care of your health, getting enough sleep, and, of course, doing more of what brings you joy.
